Icarus

This is where Icarus fell–
They wrapped him in burlap and wire.
“That’s what you get, for playing with fire.”
His body is down in the well.

He dreams of her eyes and her hair
As acorns sprout under his tongue.
They say sex can ruin you, when you’re too young.
His dreams seem to take him nowhere.

Icarus learned seagulls’ wings.
The porpoises taught him their fins.
Grit your teeth, fly too high, and that’s how it begins–
Icarus loved learning things.
